RETURN TO INDEX

 for October 10th, 2002

The feedback from our first issue was overwhelming - thanks for writing! Keep those comments and questions coming. We love hearing from you. Starting in our next issue, we'll choose a few reader questions that may appeal to a wide audience and answer them in the newsletter (with your permission of course). There are several ways to contact us: This issue is dedicated to saving your eyesight! Do you get tired of having to squint and lean forward to see what you're reading when you surf the Net? We can help.

In this issue:

A quick fix for hard-to-read sites
Have you ever visited a web site that had dark text on a dark background? Maybe the page didn't load correctly, or maybe it's just badly designed. Either way, it's hard to read. For a quick fix, hit CNTL-A (your control key and your A key), or Command-A on a Macintosh. This will select (and highlight) everything on the page, making it much easier to read.

Making your fonts bigger
My mom is too stubborn to wear her glasses (hi Mom!). Instead she leans forward until her nose is practically on her computer screen to see what she's reading. (And she told me sitting too close to the TV would ruin MY eyes!) It's easy to change the size of the font in your browser. Click View, then Text Size (on a Mac it's Text Zoom.) Pick your choice of sizes and presto - no more headaches from squinting at tiny text.

Playing with a full deck...er, screen
Want to see more web page and less menu, but you really need the menus for navigating? Hit F11 while you are in your browser. This puts you into "full screen" mode - with minimum menu clutter. Hit F11 again to go back to your normal menu mode. (Sorry Mac users, this one won't work for you.)

A tip about your MSOL service
We care about kids, and we offer a free service that screens for and blocks inappropriate material from little eyes. To activate this free service, go to MidSouth Online, sign in, and click the Member Services tab. You'll see a link that says "Internet Security Suite [Details]" Then, just follow the instructions on the site.

This issue's fun site

www.jigzone.com

Free online jigsaw puzzles you solve with your mouse. This site is hopelessly addictive!
